This is another personal homage to one of more fascinant of forgotten WH 40.000 characters: Genestealer Patriarch.

On old Tyranid codex from second WH 40.000 edition, Patriarch is the main ruler of the evil genestealer cults, formed by hybrids, born from human infected by genestealers. The cult grows up into the imperium cities, supported by human cultists and commanded by Psychic Magus Advisor, the most human-like and powerful of hybrids. The two synaptic creatures wash the mind of human cultists and push them to rebellion. When the cult has grown enough, patriarch sends a psychic signal in order to attract the incoming Hive fleet, let them know that planet is ready for be devoured.

This is a free recreation of old Patriarch and Magus miniatures. Notice that both of them have similar gesture on their faces. This is due to their Synaptic connection, their collective mind. Basically, Magus translates Patriarch´s will to human language.

Now this brings back good old memories of both Space Hulk and the old fluff stories like "the Alien Beast Within" by Ian Watson. Too bad GW retconned their stuff so that this never happens anymore.

Loved the old g-stealer magi...
Actually in 2nd Ed. WH40K Tyranid codex there was this whole "build your own cult"-thingie going on.

It's a shame they went on with the whole Zerg/StarshipTroopers-bug theme... one of many things that was awesome in old 40K (just like the really funny and very british orkz...)

Yeah, that´s true. Genestealer cult appears on White dwarf matherial for Rogue Trader edition, but the Codex Book didn´t appear until second edition.

It´s really a shame, yes. It seems Jess godwin wants now to return to that giger-based biomechanic concept. The new Hive tyrant has recovered its bone sword and its classic shape.

If there's one criticism that I had to make, it's that I'm not terribly keen on the Patriarch's head - He had a chilling scowl, but it's a little small and looks quite unsuited to the heavy, dumpy body that he possesses, and it gives the impression that he's wearing a bodysuit rather than being a fell harbinger of destruction! I think that it should be more resemblant of a natural Genestealer's skull.

With that said, I quite admire your rendition of the Magus! You have a neat way of integrating teh Tyranid carapace into a stately costume which reflects well the Magus's dual role as both dominant figure and slave to the swarm.

Incidentally, the Patriarch isn't quite "forgotten" in the modern game - well into the life of the Third Edition of the game, Warhammer Monthly ran a comic strip dedicated to an Inquisitor battling a Genestealer insurgency (regrettably I can't recall the exact title now, though), which featured quite a monstrous Patriarch as a foe. Rest assured, they're still lurking there behind the scenes! :)
Dude on the right look like an evil Tau etherial.

Genestealer cults were awesome.
I hope they return in codex form some day.

Warhammer Tau
The general idea of the xenos secretly operating right under imperial nose was great... but since 1997, starting with Sisters of Battle this whole purge, cleanse, kill anything remotley weird-stuff got out of hand I think and Warhammer 40K was going too much into the "crazy religious zealots" direction and with it the crazy artworks left (there is a lot of almost surreal b/w artwork in some 2nd edition 40k books, and even more so in Path of the Damned and Slaves to Darkness) and the general horror of aliens and unspeakable things far worse dwelling out there in space was gone too. In a way it's like Alien/Aliens compared to Alien vs. Predator.

Well, and when things couldn't be any worse... they brought in the Tau.
